Has all this rain and stormy weather made you daydream of a winter getaway? Me too! But don’t worry, jetting off to warmer climes doesn’t mean you have to visit the usual tourist traps; below, I’ve put together a few suggestions of places you can go that combine high temperatures, a wealth of cultural attractions and something a little bit different.

Brilliant if you want to get off the beaten track, Burma only reopened to tourists in recent years. This is the place to come if you want to really feel like you’re discovering something new, with the country being home to everything from gold and ruby-encrusted stupas to spectacular natural attractions.
Among the highlights is Shwedagon Paya (the gold stupa I just mentioned) in the city of Yangon and the spectacular ancient temple-filled city of Bagan. I’d also like to point out that while its cultural attractions are awe-inspiring and these are certainly the star of the show, there are also a fair few beaches worth checking out.

These include Ngapali Beach, which is in Rakhine State. The best-known beach in the country, it has shockingly clear water and is back by gently swaying palm trees. Over in the Ayeyarwady region, meanwhile, is Chaungtha Beach – somewhere I’d particularly recommend going if you’re into seafood, because it’s famous for its delicious local dishes. Next on my list is Lombok, which is an island in Indonesia. Located just to the east of the better-known Bali, Lombok is a quieter alternative and has an enticing combination of beautiful beaches, spectacular marine life and towering mountains.
Senggigi is the most popular area among tourists, and is perched over a beautiful bay that’s renowned for offering some of the best sunset views around. In fact, you can actually watch the sun go down over neighbouring Bali here – something that makes it particularly scenic.
For those of you who fancy doing a little more than lying on the beach and catching scenic sunsets, though, there are the fantastic waves of the south coast. This area is pretty unbeatable for surfing, so if you’re into the sport Lombok should definitely be high up on your shortlist of holiday destinations.
As a quick tip, Lombok is also famous for its wonderful woven cloths and pottery, so try to pick up something locally made and unique as a souvenir.

I’ll round things off with Phuket, which is the most popular winter sun destination on my list. While it’s no longer exactly a hidden gem, it is a reliable favourite if you want to do something that’s a little bit more exciting than playing a few rounds of golf in the Canary Islands.
Phuket is an island in the south of Thailand, but it’s worth remembering that it’s also the name of the wider province of Phuket (which includes several isles) and Phuket Town, because things can get confusing otherwise! The hotter and drier weather tends to fall between November and April, making the UK winter the perfect time to visit.
A particularly good place to if you’re after great beaches, water sports and nightlife, the island has a strong tourist infrastructure. Patong is the largest resort area and is the place where you’ll find the liveliest clubs and bars, while all the major beaches like Patong, Kata and Karon have facilities and tuition for sports like windsurfing, scuba diving and sailing.
