When you’re considering where to take the kids on holiday, places like Spain’s Costa del Sol or the Vendee in France probably spring to mind. But Costa Rica? Probably not.

However, for both you and your children, eschewing your usual bucket-and-spade locations in favour of somewhere a bit more exotic could be exactly what you need.

But just what can Costa Rica offer the family with a taste for adventure?

If there’s one thing that never fails to get kids (and adults) excited it’s the sight of a cute critter or two.

As one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, Costa Rica more than delivers in this department, with beautiful birds, big cats and creepy crawlies all present in the cloud forests of Monteverde.

These lush and misty areas of jungle in the centre of the country are home to colourful species such as the resplendent quetzal and toucan, elusive predators like the jaguar and plenty of exotic frogs and snakes.

Knowledgeable local guides offer interpretative walks through the forest, helping you to spot some of the harder-to-see creatures and learn more about the ecosystem while you’re at it.

Just remember to pack some waterproofs as things can get pretty wet – it’s not called the rainforest for nothing!

Scenery

If your kids enjoyed making baking soda and vinegar volcanoes at school, they’ll absolutely love the opportunity to explore real-life magma-makers in the Arenal National Park.

Home to the active Volcan Arenal – although it hasn’t erupted for a couple of years now – and the lagoon-topped Mount Chato, this 47 square kilometre conservation area is visually stunning – with perfectly formed conical volcanoes surrounding by lush forests and lakes.

Jungle trails lead to huge waterfalls and swimming holes, spectacular views emerge through the trees and, for families with teenagers, the strenuous hike to the summit of the 1,140m Cerro Chato rewards you with the sight of a beautiful turquoise crater lake. Make the scramble down into the crater for the chance to dip your feet in the cool water of the lagoon, 3,700ft above sea level on top of a volcano!

Forgot ice creams, piers and deck chairs, the beaches of Costa Rica are idyllic palm-fringed specimens backed by surf shacks and splashed by curling waves.

Unlike in Britain’s frigid waters, young surfers can improve their skills on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast without the need for a wetsuit, with surf school teachers on hand in almost every beach resort to pass on their top tips.

Some of the finest stretches of sand are found in the Manuel Antonio National Park, which is also a haven for wildlife such as monkeys and toucans. The combination of sea, sand and jungle is spectacular.

New experiences

If the sight of exotic animals, active volcanoes and deserted beaches isn’t enough, Costa Rica can also give kids a chance to get their first taste of a pampering at a thermal spa, enjoy an Indiana Jones-style boat ride through the jungle-lined canals of the Tortuguero National Park and develop a head for heights on a canopy sky walk in the rainforest.
