5 Green European Cities
February 15, 2013

Saving the environment has now been an issue for people across the world for several years. One group of people, however, who were never seemingly too concerned with protecting planet Earth were travellers. That has even started to change, though, and green travellers are becoming more and more concerned with making their travels more environmentally friendly. If that sounds like you, then you may want to take a look at these five cities which are leading the way in the fight to protect the planet!

Known more so for its football team and its Gaudi architecture, Barcelona is also one of the continent’s most environmentally conscious. With an efficient network of Metro, trams and fuel-efficient buses, the city’s transport network is one of the most advanced of the world’s major cities.

Add to that the Bicing system of bicycles that locals can use after paying a reasonably priced yearly fee. The bikes are docked in stations around the city and after swiping your card you can take one out and return it to any other station in the city – a very green system indeed!

Berlin, Germany

In a country where almost everybody drives, you’d be surprised to learn that the capital Berlin actually has the fewest cars per head of the population. With efficient public transport, Berliners simply don’t need them as much! The Berlin buses and trains run enough miles each to cover a trip to the moon and back – that’s how much ground they cover!

Aside from public transport efficiency, the city has solar-based companies and that obviously saves a lot of power. And more and more companies are joining in despite the economic downturns as the long-term benefits of solar power are seen to outweigh any short-term costs.

London’s mayor Boris Johnson has been called many things, but one thing his critics cannot call him is a neglecter of the environment. During his time as mayor he has fought for more cycle lanes in the city (he himself will often be seen riding his bike), overseen the greenest Olympic Games ever and is the mayor of a city which has a controversial, yet effective congestion charge for entering the city. There is no doubt that London, while still a big polluter, is cutting down its carbon emissions by more and more each year.

Paris, France

Although France as a whole may have arrived on the green scene rather late, the country is rapidly stepping up its efforts to help the environment and Paris is leading by example and has become one of Europe’s least polluted capitals.

Eco cafés and organic markets have sprung up around the city in recent years and the lights of the City of Lights have also become more sustainable, with LEDs now used on the Champs-Elysées, saving around 90% of energy, while the lights show at the Eiffel Tower only lasts five minutes now in comparison to the ten that we used to see.

Dublin, Ireland

The Irish capital is another European green city and is on a shortlist to potentially become European Green Capital in 2015.

The city finds itself on the shortlist after the success of its bike rental scheme and the fact that it has fought hard to protect its green spaces. We’ll soon see if that has earned it the title!
